As Christians, we have a unique opportunity to show the love of Jesus to this world, to be His hands and feet. In fact, it’s a responsibility. We had a team from South Carolina with us this past week who were a wonderful example of people who love people because of Jesus.
They joined us to do some outreach in our community. We started the week with a couple of projects: two homes in need of repair received some tlc courtesy of this fantastic group. They provided the manpower and the funds.
Project One was for a sweet woman with MS. She had a ramp to her home (she is in a wheelchair) and on the other side of the house a set of stairs. She had little space to sit, other than a place to park as she hung her laundry. The team connected the the ramp structure with a new deck and set of stairs. Now she and her family can enjoy the summer evenings together. She was moved to tears by the team’s generosity. If that were not enough, the girls on the team wanted to give a gift to this woman’s grandchildren, who eagerly helped with the work. Their thoughtfulness amazes me and this family.
Project Two was for a couple who both have multiple health issues. The siding on their home had been started, but uncompleted. The team finished the siding, replaced the screens and put up a new windbreaker at the door (this is a common structure here on the coast). The team worked very hard to complete it in one loonnngg day, and the family was very grateful!
We enjoyed two regular services and members of the team led us in worship through music, shared testimonies and encouraged us from the Word of God. Some also helped out in our Senior’s Residence ministry.
One of the lovely ladies hosted an evening just for the girls. She blessed and challenged us with a message on having our ‘cup’ (our lives) filled by Him.
The team organized a fun beach night with the youth, including a competitive soccer match, a bonfire with s’mores, music and a devotional.
We had a one dollar car wash where the community could come for a car wash and receive a dollar. After the young people washed the car, one of the guys would hand the ‘customer’ a loonie and explain that this was a demonstration of Jesus’ gift of salvation. He does all the work, salvation is a free gift and we get the blessing as we are washed clean from our sins. The ‘customers’ were each given a Gospel of John, as well. Most were astounded with the concept of getting something for nothing.
Finally, for Canada Day, we set up a BBQ and mini concert in a vacant lot, complete with two bouncy castles, face painting and a few simple carnival games. Everything was free of charge. It was a great time together, and many from the community enjoyed the event.
This superb group had a huge impact on our town and on our church and on our family.
They are truly His hands and feet.
